    Origin of Wei*, Ngai*

    Famous People in History

The 47th most common last name in China. The Weis are descendents of Zhou Wen Wang, who in turn was a descendent of the ancient king Huang Di. Zhou Wen Wang had a son called Bi Gong Gao (Zhou Wu Wang's brother), who was awarded the duke of North west of Xian in Shanxi. The Wei kingdom ended because of lack of heirs, and its people migrated elsewhere bearing the last name Wei. During Chun Qiu, a descendent of Bi Gong Gao, named Bi Wan became a high-ranking judge in the Jin kingdom. In 661 B.C. Bin Wan (together with Zhao Feng) led the Jin army and eliminated Huo, Geng and Wei. The duke of Jin thus awarded the Wei kingdom to Bi Wan. Bi Wan thus named his descendents Wei. During the Zhan Guo period, Wei allied with Zhao and Han, and fought against other kingdoms. They eventually divided the Jin kingdom and became one of the seven kingdoms of Zhan Guo.
